Microsoft redefines Copilot as an ‘OS for work’ with Office integration

Microsoft is repositioning Copilot as an ‘OS for work,’ moving beyond its role as a simple chatbot to become a unified productivity platform. During a private event for key enterprise clients, CEO Satya Nadella compared this shift to the transformative impact of Microsoft Office in the 1980s and 90s.

The new Copilot interface aims to integrate the entire Office ecosystem—including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—directly into the assistant. This allows users to create, edit, and manage documents and spreadsheets within a single environment without switching applications. The redesigned platform features three primary functional areas: Home (combining chat and coworking), Code (for application and dashboard creation via natural language), and Autopilot.

Autopilot is a new AI agent designed to work autonomously on complex tasks, even when the user is not present, replacing the previously announced Microsoft Scout. Under the leadership of Jacob Andreou, Microsoft is working to balance consumer-friendly design with the rigorous security and control requirements of enterprise IT departments. The company also announced updates to Surface hardware and the introduction of Microsoft Ink Canvas, an AI-powered digital drawing app.
