Microsoft Azure seeks 20% cost reduction amid AI expansion

Microsoft Azure president Girish Bablani has reportedly requested that division leaders propose ways to reduce costs by at least 20%. This directive comes despite significant revenue growth for the cloud unit, which saw a 40% year-over-year increase in recent fiscal periods.

The push for efficiency is driven by the massive capital expenditures required to expand AI-focused data center infrastructure. Microsoft's total capital expenditure rose approximately 69% year-over-year to roughly $41 billion as of the second quarter. While the specific methods for achieving these savings are still under discussion—with potential options including terminating third-party contracts—it remains unclear if the cuts will result in employee layoffs within the division's approximately 11,500 workers.

Microsoft has denied reports that leadership instructed employees to develop formal cost-cutting strategies, stating that the business frequently prepares for various contingencies.
