Microsoft shifts reporting and discloses Azure revenue
Overview
Microsoft is implementing a significant overhaul of its financial reporting structure, marking its first major reorganization of business segments since 2015. Starting in fiscal year 2027, the company will transition from three business segments to two: ‘Agents and Infrastructure’ and ‘Devices and Consumer’.
As part of this change, Microsoft will begin disclosing quarterly revenue in dollars for its Azure cloud platform, a move that provides greater transparency following years of investor requests to see actual revenue figures rather than just growth percentages. For the quarter ending in June 30, 2026, Azure revenue was reported at US$29.42 billion, representing a 42% year-over-year increase. Annual Azure revenue for fiscal year 2026 exceeded US$100 billion, reaching US$101.9 billion.
Recent reports indicate Azure growth is accelerating, with revenue increasing from 40% in the prior quarter to 43%, and management has provided guidance for approximately 45% growth in the current quarter. To support long-term capacity, Microsoft is investing heavily in data centers in the Gulf region alongside Schneider Electric, though this requires substantial capital expenditure.
Despite these milestones, Microsoft’s stock has faced volatility. Shares recently traded down 1.2% during mid-day trading, following a period of relatively flat performance. Earlier in the year, investors expressed anxiety regarding high AI infrastructure spending and its impact on returns.
To ensure Azure more purely reflects its consumption-based infrastructure business, Microsoft will reclassify certain services, such as GitHub Cloud, Security Copilot, and healthcare-specific cloud solutions, into other segments. CEO Satya Nadella stated that under the new structure, Azure will become more closely aligned with the company’s consumption-based platform and infrastructure business, noting that AI is blurring product boundaries and reshaping business models.
