Microsoft CEO defends Xbox strategy amid major restructuring

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has reaffirmed Xbox’s commitment to its dual role as both a game publisher and a hardware provider for consoles and PC. Speaking on the division's future, Nadella expressed confidence in the company’s intellectual property portfolio and supported the ongoing restructuring efforts led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. He stated the goal is to implement a “sustainable business model” to drive growth in the upcoming fiscal year.

The division is currently undergoing significant organizational changes, including the integration of various studios under larger umbrellas like Activision and Bethesda. For instance, Obsidian Entertainment is being absorbed into Bethesda’s reporting structure, a move Bethesda President Jill Braff described as primarily administrative to preserve the studio’s creative identity.

These strategic shifts follow a period of substantial layoffs and studio reorganizations within the Xbox ecosystem. While leadership views these moves as necessary streamlining to optimize efficiency and reach more players, industry analysts have noted the complexity of balancing proprietary hardware with an increasing push toward multiplatform game releases.
