Microsoft Xbox strategic restructuring and direction

Overview

Microsoft is undergoing a significant organizational restructuring within its Xbox division, led by CEO Asha Sharma. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has defended the company’s dual strategy of acting as both a hardware provider and a game publisher, aiming to implement a “sustainable business model” through the integration of various studios, such as absorbing Obsidian Entertainment into Bethesda.

Following these internal changes, industry observers have questioned the long-term viability of this approach. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden criticized the lack of a clear direction, arguing that Microsoft must choose between being a hardware platform requiring exclusive titles or a global third-party publisher. Layden noted that attempting to fulfill both roles simultaneously may be unsustainable, particularly as major titles have begun appearing on competing consoles.
