Microsoft tests Xbox Disc-to-Digital feature for physical games
Microsoft is rolling out a “Disc-to-Digital” feature, currently being tested by Xbox Insider members through Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead channels. The tool, internally codenamed “Positron,” allows players to convert compatible physical Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs into digital licenses for their Xbox libraries.
To use the service, players insert a compatible disc into an Xbox Series X console, install it, and launch the game to receive the digital authorization. This process enables games to be played via Xbox Cloud Gaming and, for Xbox Play Anywhere titles, on Windows PCs and compatible handheld devices.
Reports indicate that approximately 1,212 games are currently compatible with the program, including major titles such as “Halo Infinite,” “Forza Horizon 4,” “Cyberpunk 2077,” “Baldur’s Gate 3,” “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” and “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Notably, the feature also supports over 200 delisted games, providing a way for players to maintain access to titles that are no longer available for direct purchase in digital storefronts.
