Microsoft launches Xbox Disc to Digital feature for all users
Microsoft has officially rolled out the ‘Disc to Digital’ feature to all Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners following a testing period with Xbox Insiders. This service allows players to convert eligible physical game discs into digital licenses that are automatically added to their accounts.
Once converted, the digital version can be played on consoles without a disc drive, such as the Xbox Series S, or via Xbox Cloud Gaming and PC if the title supports ‘Xbox Play Anywhere’. While a complete official list of compatible titles has not been released, community databases suggest over 1,500 games are currently supported, including titles from Ubisoft and SEGA, though Square Enix is not yet included.
Ownership of the physical disc remains a requirement for the digital license. Microsoft specifies that if a user loses, sells, or gives away the physical disc, the digital license may be restricted or revoked. This approach contrasts with competitors like Sony, which has indicated a shift toward digital-only releases for new PlayStation titles starting in 2028.
