Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to 60,000 employees

Microsoft has announced a voluntary exit program targeting approximately 60,000 employees, representing more than a quarter of its global workforce. The initiative, announced by Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, aims to increase organizational flexibility and reallocate capital toward artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The program is available to eligible employees at level 70 and below, including vice-president levels, in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom. Targeted departments include AI, Copilot, CoreAI, Xbox, Windows, and Devices. However, employees in marketing, commercial business, sales, security, and data center teams are reportedly excluded from the offer.

This announcement coincides with Microsoft reporting quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion and a profit of over $36.6 billion, exceeding analyst expectations. The company’s Azure cloud division saw 48% growth during the September quarter. This buyout follows a previous program in April that offered early retirement options to approximately 7% of the US workforce.
