Microsoft workforce restructuring
Overview
Microsoft has begun a period of workforce reduction following years of steady growth. According to its 2026 fiscal year annual report, the company’s total headcount decreased to approximately 223,000 full-time workers as of June 30, 2026, down from 228,000 the previous year. This decline was noted in product research and development, sales, marketing, and administrative roles. In late October 2026, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) program targeting up to 60,000 employees, representing approximately 27% of the global workforce. The program affects staff in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom, specifically targeting employees at level 70 and below, including vice-president levels. Eligible departments include AI experiences, Copilot, Core AI, Xbox, Windows, HR, and Finance, while sectors such as marketing, commercial business, security, and data center operations are reportedly excluded. The buyout packages are expected to include financial assistance, such as base pay linked to tenure, continued stock vesting, and career-transition resources. Employees are expected to make decisions by early December, with departures potentially scheduled for the end of the year. Coleman stated in an internal memo that the initiative aims to ‘provide flexibility and support for employees considering a career transition.’ This announcement follows a previous program in April that offered early retirement options to approximately 7% of the US workforce. These changes coincide with a significant shift in corporate focus toward artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure. This follows previous workforce reductions earlier in the year, including a plan in July to cut 4,800 positions. Microsoft has forecasted capital expenditures of approximately $175 billion for the 2026 calendar year to support investments in data centers and specialized chips.
