Microsoft update KB5002907 linked to Office license deactivation
Microsoft's optional update KB5002907, designed to bring Microsoft 365 applications that are more than 90 days out of date up to current builds, is being linked to widespread activation issues for perpetual license holders.
Users of Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019, particularly the Home & Business editions, have reported that their software suddenly loses its authenticated status. This results in warnings that functionality will be reduced or removed, and in some cases, applications may disappear from the system entirely. Affected users have described being forced into loops where they must repeatedly re-enter product keys or sign in and out of accounts to restore stability.
Microsoft has stated that the KB5002907 update is not installed automatically and is intended for consumer and commercial Windows PCs on the Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. While the update is meant to assist with automatic servicing, reports from users and technical forums suggest a correlation between the manual installation of this patch and the deactivation of older, non-subscription Office versions.
