Xbox plans hardware launches and Game Pass restructuring

Under the leadership of CEO Asha Sharma, Xbox is undergoing a significant strategic restructuring aimed at improving profitability. Key developments include a potential overhaul of the Xbox Game Pass subscription model, which may transition from a fixed bundle to a more modular, à la carte system. This proposed change would allow players to select specific features such as cloud gaming, online multiplayer, or console-exclusive access as optional add-ons.

In terms of cloud services, Microsoft is testing a “Cloud Playtime” model. This allows users to purchase prepaid blocks of streaming time without a Game Pass subscription. Introductory packages include 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99. Additionally, existing Game Pass subscribers will face new monthly cloud gaming limits starting in November: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium, and 5 hours for Essential tiers.

Hardware developments are also underway. Microsoft is reportedly targeting the 2027 holiday season for a next-generation handheld device and the 2028 holiday season for a new home console, internally known as Project Helix. Preliminary reports suggest the Project Helix console could cost between $1,200 and $1,800. These moves come as the company manages workforce reductions, with a goal to cut 3,200 positions during the 2027 fiscal year.
