Microsoft Xbox service and hardware restructuring

Overview

Microsoft is implementing several updates to its Xbox ecosystem. The company is developing a major overhaul of the Xbox PC application, codenamed Garrison, which aims to provide a console-like interface similar to the Xbox Series X|S. This update focuses on improved performance, streamlined navigation, and better distinction between locally downloaded games and cloud gaming titles.

Reports indicate a significant restructuring of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service under the leadership of CEO Asha Sharma. Moving away from fixed-tier bundles, Microsoft is reportedly considering a modular, “à la carte” model. This system would allow subscribers to select a base tier and add optional extras such as cloud gaming, online multiplayer, or access to console-only titles. To manage costs, Microsoft is introducing time-based limits for cloud gaming, with varying monthly allowances for Ultimate, Premium, and Essential tiers. Specifically, starting in November, Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours, Premium will receive 10 hours, and Essential will receive 5 hours. Additionally, a new “Cloud Playtime” option is being introduced, allowing users—including those without a subscription—to purchase specific blocks of streaming hours, such as 10, 25, or 50 hours. This model is currently being tested by Xbox Insiders.

To improve profitability and address reportedly low profit margins of approximately 3%, Microsoft is planning significant workforce reductions, aiming for 3,200 job cuts by the end of fiscal year 2027. Hardware developments are also progressing, with Microsoft targeting the 2027 holiday season for a new handheld device, followed by a next-generation home console codenamed “Project Helix” in late 2028. Internal projections suggest the “Project Helix” console could cost consumers between $1,200 and $1,800 without subsidies.
