Microsoft signs multibillion-dollar AI deal with France's Mistral

Microsoft and French AI start‑up Mistral AI announced a multibillion‑dollar partnership to expand European AI compute capacity. Microsoft will rent Mistral’s data‑centre infrastructure for Azure customers and integrate Mistral’s Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models into its Foundry and Copilot platforms. The agreement is presented as a step toward European digital sovereignty, reducing reliance on U.S.‑only AI stacks.

Mistral is investing about €4 billion in new data centres in France and Sweden, targeting 200 MW of capacity by 2027 and a gigawatt by 2030. The partnership does not involve a new equity stake from Microsoft, but the tech giant will fund the hardware expansion and offer Azure credits for joint go‑to‑market pilots. Both companies’ leaders – Microsoft President Brad Smith and Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch – stressed that Europe should have access to the most advanced AI without compromising control over data, operations or the digital future. Regulators are expected to scrutinise the deal for competition concerns, while the collaboration aims to meet growing demand for AI services in regulated sectors such as finance, health and critical infrastructure.
