Microsoft is launching a disc-to-digital program for Xbox Insiders on August 31, 2026. The initiative allows players to convert supported physical game discs into digital licenses for use on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles.

Under the program, which is internally referred to by the codename “Positron”, users can insert a disc to claim a digital entitlement tied to their account. This entitlement enables access to games via Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, while the physical disc remains functional.

The digital license is designed to be transferable. If a user sells or lends their physical disc, the digital license will migrate to the new owner's profile once they insert the disc into a compatible console. This mechanism is intended to prevent license duplication while providing greater flexibility across the Xbox ecosystem.

Thousands of titles are expected to be supported at launch. However, the program is limited to specific titles that have publisher authorization. Older media, such as Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs, are not included in this specific program but are instead part of Microsoft’s broader game preservation efforts.
