LUX-ZEPLIN experiment detects potential dark matter signal

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment has detected a mysterious single particle event that may provide evidence for dark matter. The signal, which cannot be convincingly attributed to any known source of interference, aligns with theoretical models for certain forms of dark matter.

Located approximately 1.5 kilometers underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, the detector uses liquid xenon to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). The findings were presented at the TeV Particle Astrophysics Conference 2026. While the signal is significant, researchers note that it does not yet constitute definitive proof of dark matter's existence.
