Physicists at the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, located 1.5 kilometers underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, have reported a potential dark matter signal. Using 10 tons of liquid xenon, the detector recorded an unusual particle interaction that may involve a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP).
The signal, described as a “mysterious single particle event,” cannot be convincingly attributed to known sources of interference and aligns with theoretical models for certain forms of dark matter. While the findings were presented at the TeV Particle Astrophysics Conference 2026, researchers caution that the anomaly does not yet constitute definitive proof of dark matter’s existence.
