Microsoft Xbox Game Pass Faces Layoffs and 2027 Title Uncertainty
Microsoft announced a restructuring of its Xbox division that will cut 3,200 positions by July 2027. The move follows a large shortfall in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, with the service holding about 30 million subscribers—far below the company’s internal target of 77 million for mid‑2026. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed the gap and said the layoffs are intended to realign the business.
Separately, the 2027 Game Pass lineup lists several day‑one releases such as Fable and Clockwork Revolution, but the future of titles like State of Decay 3 and Senua is uncertain. The uncertainty stems from the recent sales of Undead Labs and Ninja Theory, whose new owners are not contractually obliged to keep the games on Game Pass, potentially affecting their scheduled releases.
Studios have expressed resistance to the Game Pass model, fearing it devalues their games, adding internal tension as Microsoft pushes ahead with its subscription strategy.
