Microsoft Xbox grapples with ad speculation and staff layoff worries

Microsoft has clarified that it has no current plans to place advertisements inside Xbox games. The rumor stemmed from remarks by newly appointed Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball, who discussed rising development costs and the potential of ad‑supported models for services like Game Pass. Ball later emphasized that he never spoke of in‑game ads and that no official policy exists.

Separately, former Obsidian Entertainment staffer Chris Avellone warned that some Xbox Games Studios teams, previously told they were safe from cuts, are now uncertain about possible layoffs. While no new wave of redundancies has been announced beyond earlier reductions, the internal climate is described as anxious, with employees awaiting further information after Microsoft’s fiscal‑year close.
