Syria begins gasoline transit to Iraq via Baniyas port

Syria has commenced the overland transport of imported gasoline to Iraq via the Baniyas oil terminal on the Mediterranean coast. This initiative establishes a critical energy corridor to mitigate supply disruptions caused by maritime instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation is managed under a renewable three-month transit agreement between the state-owned Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) and Qatar-based UCC Holding, which is responsible for sourcing the fuel from international suppliers. The first consignment involved approximately 32,800 metric tons of gasoline, arriving on the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Avanti. Following unloading at the Baniyas refinery, the fuel was transferred to tanker trucks, with at least 77 trucks already dispatched toward Iraq’s Baiji refinery.

Officials aim to scale operations to approximately 200 tanker trucks per day. While the current arrangement is limited to gasoline, there are discussions regarding expanding the corridor to include crude oil and other petroleum products. This development follows previous efforts by Iraq to use Syrian land routes to export oil and secure fuel imports amid regional conflict.
