A66 crash kills seven, including two police officers
A fatal head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough has killed seven people, including two police officers and five young men. The incident occurred when a Volkswagen Passat, which had been involved in a police pursuit, was driven the wrong way along the dual carriageway and struck a marked armed response vehicle.
The deceased officers have been identified as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The five occupants of the Passat were Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, and Jacob Matusiak, 23. Investigators from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have launched an inquiry into the crash.
Cleveland Police stated that the crash has significant links to serious and organised criminal activity. Twelve people have been arrested in connection with criminal activities leading up to the collision, including suspicions of involvement in an organised crime group and firearm possession. Four of the deceased individuals in the Passat reportedly had previous criminal convictions.
One of the deceased, Makai Saddington, was awaiting trial for allegedly assaulting a police officer and causing racially aggravated distress. The tragedy has prompted the UK government to urge social media platforms like TikTok to remove content that celebrates dangerous driving and reckless behavior.
