Midelescence concept explores life transitions for ages 50 to 70
The concept of ‘midelescence’ describes the intense transition occurring between the ages of 50 and 70. This stage involves physical, emotional, professional, and existential changes similar to adolescence, but occurring in mid-life. Coined by mentor and coach Mirian Lau, the term focuses on Generation X, a group characterized by deep questioning of identity, purpose, and lifestyle.
Data from Ipsos indicates that ‘midelescents’ represent 38% of the population in certain contexts, while the World Economic Forum notes that Generation X comprises 17% of the global population, moving approximately US$ 15.2 trillion annually. In Peru, life expectancy has risen significantly from 43.2 years in 1950 to nearly 77 years today.
Experts suggest that this period should be viewed as an opportunity for reinvention rather than a mid-life crisis. Planning for this new longevity involves cultivating purpose and adopting daily habits, as studies suggest that 75% of well-being depends on lifestyle choices rather than genetics.
