Indiana flooding triggers statewide disaster declaration
Extreme rainfall has triggered catastrophic flooding across Indiana, leading the governor to declare a statewide disaster. The deluge has caused significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and businesses. In Rush County, a farmer used a tractor to rescue a 2-year-old child from a flooded basement after the child became trapped during a 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event.
In Anderson, the White River crested at over 24.9 feet, surpassing its previous 1913 record. Hamilton County has also declared a state of emergency as rising waters closed more than 30 roads and flooded local fire stations and wastewater facilities. In Indianapolis and Marion County, Mayor Joe Hogsett issued a local disaster emergency and travel advisory as the White River was projected to crest at 20 feet.
The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings for numerous counties, including Boone, Hamilton, and Marion. Officials have warned that approximately 16 million Americans in the Midwest are under flood watches. Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to treat all floodwater as potentially contaminated with sewage or chemicals.
