Midwest tornado activity shifts eastward toward populated areas

Tornado activity is shifting eastward from the traditional Tornado Alley into more densely populated regions of the Midwest, according to catastrophe modelers. This expansion is increasing insurance risk exposure as severe weather impacts areas with higher population densities.

Illinois has experienced a historic surge in 2026, recording over 200 confirmed tornadoes through July. This figure far exceeds the state’s previous annual record of 142 set in 2024 and is more than triple its typical annual average of 66. Illinois is currently approaching the national single-year record of 244 tornadoes held by Texas.

Indiana and Wisconsin have also reported record-high tornado numbers. Experts attribute this eastward shift to a warming climate, which facilitates the transport of warm, humid air further north and east. While raw tornado counts across the U.S. are not necessarily rising, the increased frequency in populated states like Illinois and Indiana is driving higher economic losses and insurance claims.
