Midwest U.S. Storm System Triggers Severe Weather Alerts for Missouri and Illinois

A low‑pressure system moving across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes is expected to generate severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and evening. In mid‑Missouri, forecasters anticipate discrete supercells capable of large hail and tornadoes, followed by a line of storms with damaging winds and heavy rain. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the area in a level‑3/5 severe risk.

Across northern Illinois, the National Weather Service warns that the same system will produce widespread severe weather, including large hail, damaging wind gusts, isolated tornadoes and torrential rainfall that could cause localized flooding in the Chicago metro area and surrounding counties. Drivers are urged to prepare for rapidly changing road conditions. Conditions are projected to improve on Thursday as the system moves east.
