Midwest US Thunderstorms Trigger Heavy Rain and Flood Warnings

An active weather pattern is moving across the Midwest, bringing a series of thunderstorms to Iowa beginning Friday. Forecasters expect scattered showers and storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall, with the greatest potential from western and central Iowa into the northeast and eastern portions of the state. Residents are advised to monitor the forecast and radar, especially if outdoor plans are scheduled.

In central Missouri, training thunderstorms have produced excessive rainfall along the I‑70 corridor, with totals of 3‑5 inches reported in Columbia, Boonville and surrounding areas. The heavy rain has caused localized flooding, a water rescue in Columbia, and prompted flash flood warnings for Cooper, Howard, Saline and Boone counties. Authorities urge motorists to avoid flooded roadways, noting that as little as six inches of moving water can sweep away a person.

Both states are under heightened flood watches and advisories as the storm system is expected to persist into the early part of next week.
