Overview

By mid-August, severe weather risks continued to fluctuate across the central United States. In Nebraska, central and northeast regions faced a slight risk of isolated tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, and localized flooding during the early part of the week. Additionally, the Cape Girardeau area was identified as a location for potential isolated severe storms, with damaging winds being the primary concern for the strongest cells.

On August 16, severe weather threats intensified in Nebraska and the Cape Girardeau region. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Nebraska, where forecasters warned of wind gusts up to 75 mph, golf ball-sized hail, and the risk of ‘quick-spinning tornadoes’ as storms tracked from the northwest toward eastern Nebraska. While the overall threat was expected to diminish, intense storm cores remained a concern. In the Cape Girardeau area, isolated severe storms were identified at a marginal risk level, with damaging winds serving as the primary concern amid high temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s.

By August 26, severe weather activity expanded across multiple regions. In the central Plains, a bowing complex of thunderstorms brought risks of large hail and wind gusts up to 80 mph to southern Nebraska and northwest Kansas. Specific warnings were issued for Custer, Lincoln, Logan, and McPherson Counties in Nebraska. Other areas facing high wind threats included Goshen and Platte Counties in Wyoming, as well as portions of Louisiana and Mississippi, where gusts of up to 60 mph were possible. Additionally, a tornado warning was issued for Hamilton County, New York, due to a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado and golf ball-sized hail.
