Djibouti migrant shipwreck leaves at least 139 dead

At least 139 migrants died after a boat carrying more than 300 people capsized off the coast of Djibouti during the night of October 8 to 9. The vessel was traveling toward Yemen, a route often used by migrants seeking economic opportunities in Gulf nations.

The shipwreck occurred near Guhere, north of the port town of Obock. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 84 people remain missing, while at least 82 survivors have been accounted for. The migrants involved were primarily of Ethiopian nationality.

IOM Chief of Mission in Djibouti, Alexandre Coissac, stated that the tragedy highlights the extreme dangers faced by those on this migration route. The IOM is working with local authorities to provide emergency medical assistance, food, and shelter to survivors in Obock.

Data from the IOM indicates that more than 20,000 Ethiopians have arrived in Djibouti since September 10. Furthermore, the organization reported that over 900 migrants have died or gone missing on this specific migration route so far in 2025.
