Migrant dies during paragliding attempt into Ceuta

A migrant has died after attempting to paraglide from Morocco to the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. According to Spanish authorities and the news agency EFE, the individual lost control of the paraglider while attempting to land near the northern border and fell into the sea. The body was subsequently recovered by the Civil Guard.

This incident follows a massive surge in migration starting July 29, when an estimated 78,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, overwhelming local authorities and requiring military mobilization. The surge has caused significant diplomatic friction between European nations. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticized Spanish migration policies and called for Spain's suspension from the visa-free Schengen travel zone.

Tensions have escalated into retaliatory measures between Spain and Italy. Spain announced reciprocal border controls on Italian travelers after Italy implemented air and sea border controls on Spanish citizens on August 1. Italian officials have maintained their stance, stating they will not back down until security risks and irregular migration waves are addressed.
