Tunisia migrant boat shipwreck leaves at least 13 missing

At least 13 Tunisians are reported missing after a migrant boat capsized off the Tunisian coast while attempting to reach Italy. The vessel reportedly departed early on a Thursday, carrying approximately 15 passengers, primarily from the Ben Guerdane and Zarzis regions.

Two survivors were rescued from the water; one is reported to be in critical condition. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, involving the Tunisian National Guard, the army, and maritime units, supported by helicopters. Some reports indicate that four bodies have been recovered, though it remains unconfirmed if they originated from this specific vessel.

The incident occurs amid heightened scrutiny of the 2023 EU-Tunisia migration deal. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have criticized the agreement, alleging it has normalized human rights violations and fueled violent interceptions at sea. While departures from Tunisia have decreased due to intensified maritime controls and EU-backed funding, the central Mediterranean remains one of the world's deadliest migration routes.
