Migrant leaves child in sea during Channel crossing attempt

A video captured at Berck beach in France shows a migrant leaving a young child, approximately three to four years old, in the sea to board an overcrowded inflatable boat heading toward the United Kingdom. The child, wearing a black hooded jacket and an orange life vest, was left floating in the waves for several seconds before rescuers intervened.

This incident coincides with a significant surge in migrant crossings. British authorities reported 781 arrivals via small boats in a single day, surpassing the previous high of 752. These arrivals were made using 10 small vessels, averaging roughly 78 people per boat. Since the beginning of 2026, the total number of Channel crossings has reached approximately 18,565 people.

In response to the situation, British Education Minister Louisa Powell stated that it is not possible to intercept every vessel attempting to cross the Channel, noting, “You cannot stop everything all the time.” The ongoing influx remains a major challenge for UK authorities as they seek to curb the dangerous routes utilized by smugglers.
