Migrant Union urges Morocco and Spain to fund Ceuta victim repatriations

The Migrant Trade Union Network in Morocco is calling on the Moroccan and Spanish governments to fully cover the costs of transporting and burying the bodies of victims from the mass crossing attempts in Ceuta on July 30, 2026.

A fact-finding committee within the network reported that families of the deceased are facing significant financial and administrative burdens. Some families have been forced to pay upwards of 2,500 euros to identify, reclaim, and transport remains, a cost that does not include domestic transport within Morocco or burial expenses. The network emphasized that these families are often in fragile socio-economic conditions and are already suffering from the trauma of loss.

The network's demands include the establishment of an emergency communication mechanism by the Moroccan government to support families administratively and socially. They are also urging Spanish authorities to waive all fees and costs related to the handover and transport of remains, treating these cases as exceptional humanitarian matters to ensure victims can be buried with dignity in their home regions.
