Spain faces migration surge in Balearic and Canary Islands
Spain is experiencing a significant surge in irregular maritime arrivals across the Balearic and Canary Islands. In the Balearic Islands, authorities intercepted 74 Maghrebi migrants on Friday alone, arriving in four separate boats. These groups were distributed across Formentera, Cabrera, and Mallorca, with some individuals being located at sea and others being intercepted on land.
In the Canary Islands, migration arrivals in September have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, with 1,210 arrivals recorded. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo attributed this spike to the diversion of security resources toward the Mediterranean following recent crises in Ceuta.
Authorities in the Balearic Islands report that 342 boats carrying 6,283 immigrants have arrived in the archipelago so far this year.
