Overview

The Canary Islands have served as a central hub for the Atlantic migration route for two decades, a period marked by frequent shipwrecks and significant loss of life. A major turning point occurred in 2006 during the ‘cayucos crisis,’ when over 31,000 people from West Africa arrived in makeshift boats. Recent maritime activity continues to highlight the dangers of this route. In late August 2026, 1,046 migrants were rescued from seven vessels and brought to Mauritania and Senegal; Doctors Without Borders reported survivors arrived in a highly vulnerable state with extreme dehydration and infections. In early September, a wooden cayuco discovered adrift south of Gran Canaria resulted in 44 or 45 survivors and an estimated 83 deaths. By mid-to-late September 2026, Spain experienced a surge in irregular arrivals. In the Canary Islands, September arrivals nearly doubled compared to the previous year, totaling 1,210 people. In late September, Salvamento Marítimo rescued over 500 migrants from three vessels near El Hierro. In October 2026, arrivals reached a high intensity. On October 8, Salvamento Marítimo rescued 203 migrants near Lanzarote in two operations, including one inflatable boat carrying 125 people, noted as the largest inflatable boat recorded on the Canary Islands route to date. On October 11, three separate vessels carrying 568 people from various West African and African nations were rescued, including groups near Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. On October 22, between 415 and 435 people arrived at El Hierro via four “cayucos.” By late October, the surge caused significant regional strain. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo demanded an urgent contingency plan from the Spanish government after 3,814 migrants arrived in the archipelago during October, with 2,776 landings occurring on El Hierro. To manage the pressure, 471 migrants were transferred from El Hierro to Gran Canaria via chartered ferry.
