Mediterranean migration: 11 bodies found off Libyan coast FAST-MOVING
NGO monitoring aircraft operated by SOS Méditerranée and the Humanitarian Pilots Initiative have spotted 11 decomposing bodies in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 57 nautical miles off the coast of Zuwarah, Libya. The bodies were reportedly found in an advanced state of decomposition, with some still wearing clothes and others kept afloat by tire inner tubes.
The Italian Coast Guard has been notified and has informed Libyan authorities, as the location falls within Libya’s search and rescue zone. This discovery follows a period of increased mortality on the central Mediterranean route. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 821 people died or went missing in the first four months of 2026, representing a 111 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. Conversely, migrant arrivals on this route fell by 46 percent during that timeframe.
In separate maritime events, the NGO ship Humanity I rescued 65 migrants, including ten minors and four women, in the waters between Malta and Lampedusa. The Italian government has directed the vessel to dock at the port of Ravenna. Additionally, a record-breaking single-vessel crossing occurred in the English Channel, where an inflatable boat carrying 230 migrants reached the British coast.
