Migros expands local agricultural production model in Kayseri

Migros is expanding a local agricultural production model in Kayseri, Turkey, which began with domestic green lentils in 2023. The initiative, coordinated by the Kayseri Governor's Office, has grown to include sugar, potatoes, chickpeas, Dermason beans, pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, and sugar.

The model utilizes a crop rotation system where green lentils are planted in fields following sugar beet production. This approach increases land productivity and provides additional income for farmers by utilizing areas that were previously left fallow or underutilized.

As part of this commitment to domestic production, Migros has ceased selling imported green lentils under its private label. The company plans to purchase 3,000 tons of domestic green lentils from Kayseri between 2026 and 2027. In October, 26 truckloads of products were dispatched from Kayseri to Migros distribution centers.

The project involves collaboration between the Kayseri Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Kayseri Şeker, and various producer associations and cooperatives. Migros currently works with approximately 23,500 farmers and suppliers across Turkey, purchasing about 600,000 tons of fruits and vegetables annually.
