Miguel Ángel Solano Ruiz detained for fuel smuggling network

Miguel Ángel Solano Ruiz, a retired Navy Lieutenant Commander known as ‘Capitán Sol’, has been placed in pretrial detention following his arrest in Zapopan, Jalisco. The Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) has charged him with organized crime and fuel smuggling, specifically targeting a ‘huachicol fiscal’ network that facilitated the illegal entry of hydrocarbons into Mexico.

Investigations indicate that Solano Ruiz acted as a key operative for the Farías Laguna brothers, allegedly using his influence within the National Customs Agency and the Navy to coordinate the smuggling of fuel. He is accused of bribing customs personnel to bypass inspections and facilitate the movement of contraband. Financial intelligence reports from the UIF suggest Solano Ruiz moved over 50 million pesos through the financial system, including significant expenditures at casinos and for real estate acquisitions.

The judicial process is ongoing, with the initial hearing scheduled to continue on Thursday, October 8.
