Mika Moring faces murder trial for disappearance of Saara Arva in Finland
Mika Moring, 54, is on trial at the North Savonia District Court in Kuopio for the murder and aggravated kidnapping of Saara Arva, 35, who vanished during a road trip in late summer 2019. The pair travelled from Helsinki to the remote Vesanto area of North Savonia; Arva’s remains were discovered by anglers on the lake shore in April 2024, nearly five years after her disappearance.
Prosecutors allege Moring killed Arva with a utility knife and kept her under his control for months, citing his prior convictions for violence and sexual offences. They are seeking a custodial sentence of at least nine and a half years. In court, Moring entered wearing a hood and repeatedly refused to uncover his face, maintaining his innocence. The hearing also examined his dating‑app messages from 2019, which prosecutors say show he was seeking companionship while on the trip. The trial, which began on 13 August, is expected to continue over several days.
