Mikel Gurrea returns to San Sebastián Film Festival with ‘Sants’
Director Mikel Gurrea has returned to the official competition of the San Sebastián International Film Festival with his second feature film, ‘Sants’. Following the success of his 2022 film ‘Suro’, Gurrea’s new work explores the social reality of the Sants neighborhood in Barcelona.
The film follows Lali, a small-time thief played by Victoria Luengo, who returns home to care for her terminally ill mother, played by Ariadna Gil. The narrative shifts when Lali discovers the potential for profit in stealing sacred religious imagery from churches. She eventually joins a group of thieves specializing in religious art, led by a former nun played by Eulàlia Ramón.
Gurrea noted that the inspiration for the film came from observing the closed churches in his neighborhood, which he described as being “like a safe full of treasures.” The production emphasizes a sense of mystery through meticulous sound design and explores themes of faith, death, and care within an urban, community-focused setting.
