Mikis Theodorakis Festival celebrates composer's legacy in Chania
The 12th Mikis Theodorakis Festival is being held in Chania and the village of Galatas from August 31 to September 3. Organized by the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Chania, and the Pan-Cretan Association ‘Friends of Mikis Theodorakis’, the event celebrates the life and work of the internationally acclaimed Greek composer.
Known for his massive impact on modern Greek culture, Theodorakis was a versatile musician who composed symphonies, operas, and the famous syrtaki for the film ‘Zorba the Greek’. He was also noted for setting the poetry of Nobel laureates such as Pablo Neruda, Giorgos Seferis, and Odysseas Elytis to music. His film scores include ‘Phaedra’ and ‘Serpico’, and he received a BAFTA Award for his work on the political thriller ‘Z’.
Local officials, including Chania Deputy Regional Governor Nikos Kalogeris, emphasized Theodorakis’ connection to the region and his legacy as a fighter for democracy and human rights. Plans are also underway to complete the Mikis and Yannis Theodorakis Museum at the composer's family home in Galatas.
