Mil80 Teatro in Buenos Aires shuts down amid Javier Milei’s economic policies

Mil80 Teatro, an independent venue in Villa Crespo, Buenos Aires, announced its permanent closure. Owner and director Javier Margulis said ticket sales had fallen by about 50 percent and that the theatre could no longer cover operating costs, royalties and staff wages.

Margulis blamed the downturn on the economic measures of President Javier Milei, noting that since Milei took office almost 10 % of Argentina’s independent theatres have closed. He also criticized Culture Minister Leonardo Cifelli for the lack of meaningful subsidies, saying the few funds received this year were insufficient.

The closure reflects a broader crisis in Argentina’s independent theatre sector, with producers reporting fewer productions, reduced rehearsals and a sharp drop in audience attendance.
