Milan begins M1 metro extension to Baggio district

Construction has officially begun on the extension of Milan’s M1 red metro line toward the Baggio district. The project involves a 3.3-kilometer underground expansion starting from the current terminus at Bisceglie, which will add three new stations: Parri-Valsesia, Baggio, and Olmi.

Once completed, the extension is expected to take approximately four years. The new route will allow residents to reach Piazza Duomo from the new terminus in 21 minutes. The project aims to serve roughly 60,000 residents directly, with an estimated 7.5 million passengers per year.

In addition to the subway infrastructure, the plan includes significant urban redevelopment of the surface areas. This environmental component features the creation of 108,000 square meters of lawns, the planting of 530 trees and 2,470 shrubs, new cycle paths, and three public gardens. The project also includes the renovation of the Aics sports center in the Olmi neighborhood.
