Milano Greco Pirelli freight train derailment blocks rail traffic

A freight train derailment at the Milano Greco Pirelli station on Wednesday evening, September 16, has caused significant disruptions to rail traffic north of Milan. The incident involved a single bogie of a freight car on track 3.

The train was transporting empty cisterns intended for stabilized acrylonitrile, a highly flammable liquid chemical. While the cargo was considered hazardous, authorities confirmed the cisterns were empty and no leaks or damage occurred. As a precaution due to the nature of the goods, Rfi suspended all traffic within the affected rail node.

Emergency services, including the fire department's NBCR (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Radiological) unit, railway police, and medical teams, responded to the scene. No injuries were reported. The derailment has caused delays and cancellations on Trenord lines connecting Milan to Como, Lecco, Sondrio, and Ponte San Pietro. Technical inspections are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident and restore full service.
