Milatović calls for local government reform to aid Montenegro’s EU path
Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović emphasized the necessity of local government reform as a critical component of the country’s path toward European Union membership. Speaking at the 54th anniversary of the Association of Municipalities of Montenegro, Milatović stated that the goal is for Montenegro to become the 28th EU member by 2028.
Milatović argued that the reform transcends mere administrative reorganization, asserting that citizens experience the state most directly through local services, infrastructure, and environmental protection. He advocated for greater democratization, suggesting that citizens should have a more direct influence on electing local leadership.
Minister of Public Administration Maraš Dukaj joined the discussion, noting that the reform is a national priority that requires a shift in mindset and collaborative effort between state and local authorities. The officials highlighted that successful integration into the EU must result in tangible improvements in the daily lives of citizens across all towns and villages.
