Military Courts Issue Death Sentences and Prison Terms in DRC and Cameroon
A military court in Beni, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, delivered verdicts on five defendants on 10 July 2026. Three FARDC officers – Ilunga Jean‑Claude Maweja, Kasereka Maneno Achille and Akambo Moninga John – were sentenced to death for desertion and violating orders. Two former Wazalendo fighters, Kasereka Valihali Dalmon and Kasereka Paluku Timothée, received 20‑year prison terms for inciting troops to break discipline.
In Yaoundé, Cameroon, the centre‑regional military tribunal sentenced seven individuals linked to post‑election unrest. A woman received a one‑year suspended sentence with three‑year probation, two men were each sentenced to eight months of imprisonment, and four others received one‑year prison terms. Over 150 additional detainees remain awaiting trial, part of a larger wave of arrests following the October 2025 presidential election.
