Military Judicial Police Director calls for legal reform

During the 51st anniversary ceremony of the Military Judicial Police (PJM) in Lisbon, Rear-Admiral Paulo Isabel, the Director-General of the PJM, called for a “legal refoundation” of the institution. He argued that the current organic law, dating back to 2009, acts as an “anchor that binds us to the past” and fails to address the complexities of modern crime and technological challenges.

Isabel emphasized that a structural overhaul is necessary, including a revision of the organic law, the approval of a new personnel statute, and deeper integration into the Internal Security System. He noted that the professionalism of personnel cannot indefinitely compensate for an outdated regulatory framework.

National Defense Minister Nuno Melo confirmed that legislative changes regarding the organic law and personnel statutes are being studied. Additionally, the Ministry is considering investments to modernize investigative tools and ensure greater stability within the workforce.
