Firefighter death during Resende forest fire

Overview

A forest fire in Barrô, Resende, resulted in the death of 24-year-old firefighter Maria João Carneiro. The incident occurred late on a Thursday night when a large eucalyptus tree fell on her while she was working to contain flames near a vineyard. After being transported to the Hospital de Lamego with severe injuries, she passed away in the early hours of Friday.

In response to the tragedy, the Mayor of Resende declared three days of municipal mourning and canceled the scheduled Festa da Labareda. National leaders, including President António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, expressed condolences, describing the death as an ‘irreparable loss to the community.’

A crowd later gathered to pay tribute to Carneiro.
