Military Pensions Board faces veteran protests over pension computation

Military veterans in Abuja have staged a protest at the Military Pensions Board (MPB) office, barricading the entrance to demand a review of recent pension adjustments. The protesters allege that the computation formula used for recent increases—following salary hikes for serving personnel—has resulted in shortfalls and inconsistent payments among retirees.

Lt Col Innocent Azubike (retd.), coordinator of the Veterans Association of Nigeria, claimed the board’s application of adjustment criteria was inconsistent, leaving some pensioners with lower amounts than expected. While the board defended its formula as being in accordance with the law, a meeting between officials and veterans ended without a concrete agreement.

In response to the unrest, MPB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem has called for unity among veterans to better advocate for their welfare. He urged journalists to verify allegations with the board before publishing negative reports to maintain public confidence. Abdulraheem stated that the board is willing to address complaints and provide clarification to ensure the future pension interests of military personnel are protected.
