Nigerian military veteran pension protests

Overview

Military veterans in Abuja staged protests at the Military Pensions Board (MPB) headquarters, barricading entrances to demand a review of pension adjustment formulas. Groups including the Veterans Association of Nigeria and the Coalition of Concerned Veterans allege that current calculations do not reflect recent salary increases granted to active-duty personnel, with some retirees reporting discrepancies in their payments.

MPB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem responded by stating that the board utilizes salary structures provided by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and follows a graduated formula based on years of service. While initial meetings were held to examine discrepancies, subsequent reports indicate that discussions between officials and veterans ended without a concrete agreement.

In the wake of the unrest, Abdulraheem has called for unity among veterans and urged the media to verify allegations with the board to maintain public confidence, asserting that the board remains willing to address complaints to protect the pension interests of military personnel.
