Military Police Captain arrested after assault and shooting in São Luís

Jurambergson Gomes Soeiro Sobrinho Silva, a Military Police Captain known as ‘Berg’, was involved in a violent incident at a gas station in the Cohama neighborhood of São Luís, Maranhão. Surveillance footage captured the officer physically assaulting a female colleague, who is also a police officer, with punches and kicks. Following the assault, he reportedly drew a firearm and shot at another woman present at the scene.

The officer has been immediately removed from operational duties, and both disciplinary and criminal investigations are underway. The State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP-MA) noted that Silva has a prior history of violence against women; in August 2023, while serving as a Lieutenant, he was arrested for assaulting his then-partner, a soldier, during a pursuit that involved physical aggression and the brandishing of a firearm.

Authorities are investigating the motives behind the recent attack. The incident has prompted discussions regarding the adequacy of psychological monitoring and disciplinary processes for military personnel.
