Brazilian military police misconduct investigations
Overview
Multiple investigations are underway regarding violent incidents involving Brazilian military police officers. In São Luís, Maranhão, Captain Jurambergson Gomes Soeiro Sobrinho Silva, known as ‘Berg’, was arrested following a gas station assault. Surveillance footage showed Silva physically assaulting a female colleague and subsequently shooting at another woman. The State Secretariat of Public Security noted Silva has a prior history of violence against women dating back to 2023.
In other regions, legal proceedings continue for separate incidents. In Salvador, Bahia, soldier Valdilene Nonato Santos França was released from preventive detention regarding the death of merchant Leonardo Gil Lima, who was shot during a police operation. Meanwhile, in São Paulo, Lieutenant Colonel Geraldo Leite Rosa Neto is facing allegations of femicide following the death of his former partner, soldier Gisele Alves Santana. While Neto claims the death was a suicide, forensic reports have contested this, suggesting the fatal shot was fired from his service weapon.
